Duke Energy, Progress file mitigation proposal
 Duke Energy and Progress Energy on Wednesday filed a second wholesale market power mitigation plan with the North Carolina Utilities Commission as part of their proposed merger. The NCUC has up to 30 days to review the mitigation plan before it is filed with the FERC, which required mitigation measures to offset market power concerns in the Carolinas resulting from the proposed merger.
Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) is based in Charlotte, while Progress (NYSE: PGN) is headquartered in Raleigh.

Guess who bulked up their Red Hat holdings?
 Fidelity Management & Research Co. is the largest institutional shareholder of Red Hat stock and its position in the Raleigh-based software company only got bigger at the end of 2011.
Fidelity added 2.89 million shares to its Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) holdings in the latter part of 2011, according to stock research firm FactSet Research Systems. Cancer researcher Potti loses his S.C. job
 Dr. Anil Potti, a disgraced cancer researcher formerly with Duke University, now has another ‘former’ on his resume after the Coastal Cancer Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C., ended its relationship with him, but the center says it has nothing to do with Potti's past.
While at Duke, Potti touted some of his cancer research as breakthrough, but other researchers could never duplicate the results and prestigious academic journals later retracted articles that involved his research. The Triangle Business Journal has been reporting on Potti for months, and he was recently the subject of a 60 Minutes piece...

Raleigh named fifth most frugal city
 Raleigh is the fifth most frugal city in the U.S., according to the 2011 Savings Index released Wednesday by Coupons.com.
Atlanta won top honors in the index, with its residents having used more digital coupons than any other U.S. city. Tampa took the No. 2 position, followed by St. Louis and Cincinnati.
Charlotte ranked No. 11 on the list.
